Baroque Art
Discovery of some characteristics of baroque art.
The first truly international architectural movement, Baroque spread throughout Europe and Latin America, with very different interpretations.
Designating a pearl of curious form, the Portuguese word Barroco was adopted for this extravagant, spectacular and irregular style of art and creation, which lasted from the end of the sixteenth to the middle of the eighteenth century.
The first architectures were cathedrals, churches and monasteries, soon followed by municipal buildings, mansions and palaces.
Characterized by complexity and dynamism, the facades and interiors curved and undulated, volutes and spirals appeared, and the emphasis was on the contrasts created by shadow and light.
The flagship work; the Basilica Santa Maria della SAlute is one of the first baroque style in Venice. Created by Baltassare Longhena (1597-1682), this huge octagonal building is built on a wooden platform, and topped with two domes and two tapered campaniles.
