Charlotte Perriand

Today Focus makes us discover part of the work of the French architect, designer and photographer Charlotte Perriand.

She is a major figure in the history of modernity.

She lived from 1903 to 1999. Graduated at 22 from the Decorative Arts, she became known at 24 with her «Bar sous le toit» created for her studio apartment in Place Saint-Sulpice.

Noticed by two architects, she began a collaboration that lasted ten years (1927-1937) with Pierre Jeanneret and the cousin of the latter Le Corbusier, who included him in the team of his agency.

Charlotte Perriand is known for her interplay of materials and styles. We find these bold associations of models in his «Bibliothèque Nuage» or in his library «La maison du Mexique», of 1962, which offers a sublime mix of colors both bright and soft.

Among its iconic pieces are The «Ospite extendable table» in chromed steel and lacquered wood «LC8 swivel stool», the «LC7 swivel seat» in chromed steel and leather and the pedestal in chromed steel and circular glass top.

His stay in Japan had a strong impact on his creation. She found an answer to her popular, functional and economical architectural ideas. One of his creations became unavoidable: the rocking lounge chair called «Tokyo» LC4.

In 1982, she founded with Jean Prouvé L'École nationale supérieure de création industrielle – Les Ateliers (ENSCI – Les Ateliers) in Paris.

A school dedicated to design in all its forms and modes of thought (object, space, social, textile, digital...).
